It’s estimated that 12% of youth are in a caregiving role, which is 700,000 youth across Canada.
Many Young Carers don’t know they are one, or may keep it hidden because of fears of disrupting their family or feeling different from their peers.
Young Carers tell us that caring can be great at times, and that they’ve learned many useful and diverse skills.
Sometimes Young Carers say that caring affects how they feel about themselves and their lives, and how time spent away from friends, school and extracurricular activities is difficult and even harmful.
Generally, caring for someone else when you’re young is stressful, and brings extra responsibilities that are sometimes too much to handle.
How can our services help?
The Cowichan Young Carers Program offers free and friendly confidential support for young caregivers.
We are mobile and can meet young carers where they are - at home, at school, or in the community. Click here for more detailed information on what we do.
